VisitingCTO Monthly
Scale smarter with on-demand expertise.
Most growing companies do not need a full-time CTO. They need a CTO's judgement, applied to the handful of decisions that actually set direction — and they need it before those decisions have already been made by default.
VisitingCTO Monthly is ongoing fractional CTO leadership on a recurring engagement. You get a senior technologist embedded in your business at the level of decisions, not tickets, for a fraction of the cost of hiring at that level.
What a fractional CTO engagement covers
Technical strategy. Where the platform is going over the next twelve to eighteen months, what it will cost to get there, and which capabilities to build versus buy. Written down, so it survives contact with a changing roadmap.
Architecture review. A second set of experienced eyes on the choices that are expensive to reverse later — data models, service boundaries, authentication, anything that becomes load-bearing once it ships.
Team and hiring guidance. What to build in-house and what to outsource, who to hire next, and how to structure the team so it still works at twice the size. Interviewing support when you are hiring senior engineers without a senior engineer in the room.
Vendor and stack decisions. Evaluating the buy-versus-build calls that compound. A wrong platform choice is cheap to make and expensive to live with.
Delivery oversight. Are commitments realistic, is the team blocked on something nobody has escalated, and is the thing being built the thing that was asked for.
Access to our wider bench, at reduced rates
Technical leadership frequently identifies work that needs a specialist rather than a generalist — a database expert for a week, a security review before a customer audit, a mobile developer for one release, a data engineer to build the pipeline the AI project turned out to need.
Hiring for those gaps is slow and rarely justifies a permanent role. Finding a contractor at short notice means starting from scratch on vetting, and taking a chance on someone nobody has worked with.
Monthly clients get access to the people we already work with across disciplines — engineering, data, cloud infrastructure, security, mobile and design — at rates below our standard engagement pricing. These are practitioners we have worked with and would put in front of our own clients, not names pulled from a marketplace.
Practically, that means:
- No sourcing cycle. The specialist is identified from people we already trust, rather than a hiring process that takes weeks you do not have.
- Context already in place. They are briefed by someone who knows your system, so the ramp-up is short and you are not paying to explain your architecture twice.
- Scoped to the actual need. A week, a sprint or a single release — sized to the problem instead of a minimum contract.
- Accountable to the engagement. The work is overseen as part of your monthly engagement, so quality is our concern rather than something you have to manage alongside your own job.
The intent is that a specialist need never becomes a bottleneck, and never becomes a permanent headcount decision made under time pressure.
Who this is for
Teams with real engineering work under way and nobody in the room whose job is the long view. In practice that is usually one of three situations:
- A founder acting as their own CTO while also running the business, and aware that some decisions deserve more attention than they can give them.
- A team that has outgrown the architecture that got it to launch, where the symptoms are showing up as slower delivery rather than outages.
- A business whose technical lead has left, needing continuity and a clear head while they work out what to hire next.
How it works
Engagements run monthly, with a regular cadence of working sessions and asynchronous availability in between. There is no long lock-in: the arrangement should continue because it is useful, not because a contract says so.
We start with a short discovery conversation to establish where the pressure actually is. Sometimes the answer is that you do not need this service, and we will say so.
What you should expect
Clear recommendations with the reasoning shown, so your team can disagree with the logic rather than defer to a title. Efficiency over ego, outcomes over output, and transparency about trade-offs — including the ones that are inconvenient.
